Safety first!

Due to being an integral part of the complete measurement system, worn or under-rated test leads can cause inaccurate readings and pose a serious shock or electrocution hazard if live wires are read as being de-energized, therefore always remember to:

• 1. Check that your meter and test accessory safety ratings meet or exceed the voltage level you plan to test
• 2. Inspect your test leads before use to ensure the insulation is not nicked or cracked from age (aim to replace your test lead after 18 months)
• 3. Look for gaps or tears at the junction between the insulated wire and banana plug or probes on both ends of the lead
• 4. Run a straightforward ohms measure to confirm that your tools are electrically reliable and carry a signal within the allowance for loss parameters
