Fototranzistorius yra dviejų arba trijų išvadų puslaidininkis, kuris yra jautresnis už fotodiodą. Jis fiksuoja šviesos lygį ir naudoja jį srovėms keisti, kad sukurtų elektrinį signalą.

Dvipolis puslaidininkis gali būti pagamintas iš silicio arba kitos puslaidininkinės medžiagos.
